We  took our collection of used stamps to AK Bell Library where they will be used to help the albatross which is in danger of becoming extinct. The money raised by the charity goes towards educating the fishermen about not using hooks to catch the fish. The albatross has been declining in numbers due to swallowing the hooks. We have been collecting stamps at school all year so this was a happy culmination to the activity.

In May,  were very lucky to have Helen Brady from Heartstart visit,  to demonstrate the recovery position. She also explained what to do in an emergency if someone was to fall or become unconscious.  These are very important life skills which the children enjoyed learning. They all had a chance to work through the recovery position and took it all very seriously with some great questions at the end.

The Wellbeing Wheel shows the basic requirements for all children and young people to grow and develop and reach their full potential. It fits in well with children's rights.
Picture

As a "rights respecting school", children have been learning about their rights and the rights of children everywhere. They have been learning that no matter where they live in the world, all children have rights. Children are able to name several of those rights. After seeing the news about the earthquake in Nepal, children in The Happy Hive are aware of how lucky they are to live in Scotland.

Financial Education
Picture
We set up a bank where children paid in money each day depending on whether they had reached their targets. The money was counted at the end of the day.

Picture
During the first few weeks of January, children who attend The Happy Hive in the mornings will be learning about money. We will be setting up a bank and the children will learn about where to save money, where money is kept safe and about budgeting. They will learn the names of the coins and how to use them. We will also be talking about what things are essential to buy and what things are treats.

The children who attend in the afternoons will be learning about Cold Places - The Arctic and Antarctic.

Children enjoy looking out from the igloo pretending they are in the Arctic. Others have made diorama habitats for penguins or polar bears. They know that penguins live in The Antarctic and polar bears live in The Arctic!

Children enjoy reading and writing in an active way.                                                We bake almost every week.
